Common Causes of Dizziness

Because vertigo is caused by inner ear problems, the following inner ear issues are common causes:

  • BBPV- Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo, or BBPV, occurs when small crystals of calcium dislodge in the ear. There is no known cause for BBPV, though it can be treated by an exercise called the Epley Maneuver.
  • Acoustic Neuroma- Acoustic Neuroma occurs when a benign growth forms on the nerve that connects the brain to the inner ear. This growth is commonly slow-growing, which causes miscommunication from the inner ear to the brain, often causing dizziness.
  • Meniere’s Disease- Meniere’s disease is an inner ear problem that is usually related to viral infections. The infection causes inflammation in the ear and affects nerves that help the body to sense balance.
  • Inner Ear Infection- Inner ear infections can also be a cause of dizziness. There are many different types of ear infections, so it is important to call your doctor as soon as you start to experience symptoms to combat further complications.
